I Have A Skelton Accent...

I get so very confused as to what the deal is with people asking me where I'm from all the time. I am a Virginian and that's what I sound like. Wondering why this is always so, but numbers of people always seem to think I talk peculiar or have an accent. But I don't think I sound much different than anyone else I know in the Commonwealth. Perhaps its because unlike a lot of people my age, I actually sound as I am from Virginia ! But that's because as a child, I spent my very early summers with my older relatives from Tidewater: Norfolk, Richmond, etc. My mother, of course, was from Richmond. My father hails from the Midwest, but has a Kentucky influence. Then also coupled with the teachers and schooling I had in Loudoun County. Some people seem to think I am from the Shenandoah Valley. Others the Deep South. I had a lady from the Hook Magazine in Charlottesville insist that I was from South Carolina. In CHARLOTTESVILLE freakin' Virginia . Charlottesville is Southern! Of course, she sounded like a Yankee to me. Perhaps she was from some place North ( A lot of Northerners who move to Virginia have a hard time admitting they live in the South). Still others think I sound so very Richmond. Then others think I sound like I come from South Hill, Virginia. How extremely different those regions are !

What I do know is, I sound pretty much like The Skeltons. And they spoke with a Richmond accent that was located only to certain parts of The Fan and The West End. Even most older Richmonders didn't speak like that, because only a select few did from certain families. But I don't think mine is as pronounced. But none the less, most Southerners today from the Deep South have no Southern accents at all. I know a couple from Alabama at my church who have no accent. They mine as well be from California. And that's just sad. But I consider myself lucky that somehow by the unique way I was raised, I grew up talking as a Virginian.

And if anyone wonders what does a Skelton sound like? Here is my Richmond grandmother on the Phone:

I think you sound like Herbert from "Family Guy"

Actually, I sound more like Ewan McGregor than Herbert.

Is your family in the habit of recording phone calls? Kinda odd.

Anyway, your_accent_is_fake. No one in Richmond sounds like that.

Its part of your "Southern Gentleman" act.

Yes, I guess Ive been faking this accent for the past 30 years. No one in Richmond sounds like that, because I'm not from Richmond. I'm from Loudoun.

Thats a REAL Richmond accent! I lived in Richmond for 4 years at college. Im not sure about the original poster, but the clip is. And YES Richmonders really do talk like that. Mostly old folks though

Its very very Southern. I grew up in Raleigh, NC, actually, and coming to Richmond- I never knew I could move both North and South at the same time.

You are awesomely weird.

So first its a Richmond accent and now its a Loudoun accent?

I don't know what it is. But it isn't a fake. But its clearly obvious you don't know what a real Richmonder is like anyhow.

I grew up in Henrico....but I'm waiting for Smoothie King to tell me what a "real" Richmonder is.

Meade Skelton said...

Well, Henrico isnt bad, but its not the real Richmond. My family didn't think much of the county. Although Hanover is nice. Especially Ashland. The accent is much stronger there, actually.

And I guess Floyd Avenue is "real" Richmond right?

Meade Skelton said...

Well, yes its in the Fan. Thats the real Richmond to me. I have lived in Richmond since I was 18, and I consider myself a Richmonder.

Meade Skelton said...

How did you know I lived on Floyd? That sounds right creepy to me. I hope you aren't one of those stalkers.

How did I know?

Its been posted on Fairfax Underground for months....

I'm not sure what Fairfax Underground is. But anyways, Fairfax is a place I usually avoid unless I have a gig up there or something. You cant even get sweet tea in most places.

Sure Meade...whatever you say.

You sound like my uncle. We think he's retarded. Either way, he was born without a tongue.
